The AMTE Animal Ark

The Amte’s Animal Ark is an orphanage cum rescue centre at Hemalkasa for young wild animals, whose parents have been killed by the tribal people only for food and not for fun or entertainment. LBP has worked to save the lives of many young animals deserted in the forests.

The love of Dr. Prakash Amte towards animals cannot be expressed in words and the Amtes have always embraced orphaned & injured animals of the region.Today, the list of animals at the Amte Animal Ark is long – jackals, leopards, jungle cat, common palm civet, rhesus macaque, sloth bear, giant squirrel, rat-tail langur, four-horned antelope, black buck antelope, rat snake, Indian python, crocodile, monitor lizard, banded krait, peacocks, a spotted deer, porcupines and neelgai. In all, there are 90 animals in the animal ark. This animal ark is a major attraction for visitors and is a favourite especially among children.

It also offers:

  • Healthcare and Rehabilitation: Comprehensive healthcare delivery programs for physical, psychological socioeconomic empowerment of leprosy afflicted people with severe deformities
  • Education: Vocational training centres for people with disabilities and unemployed rural youth; Formal education for rural and tribal populace, special schools for hearing and speech impaired and the visually challenged.
  • Livelihood promotion for disabled: Livelihood promotion activities through treatment, skill building and market linkage initiatives for people with leprosy and other disabilities, tribal and economically weaker sections of society.
  • Sustainable Agriculture Programs and Extension Activities: Knowledge delivery through direct farm action programs, development of tools for initiatives in agricultural R&D and policy advocacy for promoting enabling conditions for agricultural extension activities.
  • Appropriate technologies for Rural Development: Development of social laboratories for promoting a host of sustainable and replicable technologies advocating environmental sustainability.
  • Youth Empowerment: Conducting national level camps for generating awareness about pressing social issues and giving constructive action plans to youth for promoting communal harmony and national integration.

Eastbound Recommends: Guests traveling to Tadoba National Park can visit the Amte Animal Ark Centre as a day trip from Tadoba. The drive from Tadoba to center is approx 2hrs one way. The center remains open for visitors from 0730hrs to 1130hrs and then 1430hrs to 1700hrs every day. The afternoon visit is best suited for our guests itinerary ex Tadoba. With a prior notice the centre will also arrange a local volenteer to take guests around. Hence is important to give them an advance notice.
